Weight watchers points system overhaul them and come up with an entirely new program points plus (or Pro points in the UK).
The previous formula glasses (started in 1997) took into consideration the calorie and fat grams fiber. PointsPlus formula uses the protein, carbohydrate, fiber and fat grams.
Weight watchers spent several years of testing the new program (at the Medical University of South Carolina, among other places). According to weight Watchers trials resulted in "improving behaviour that help people maintain weight loss and reduce the desire to eat without physical hunger or food needs. (src).
Critique the previous formulas, the claim that it did not differentiate clearly between more fully dense foods and "empty calories". This is due to the heavy light calories for other nutrients.
When we have a 100-calorie Apple in one hand and a package of 100-calorie cookie, and we view them as "the same" as the same calories, that says everything you need to say on the limitation of just using the calories in the food choices.

Points plus Deluxe Starter Kit
What is a new formula?
Specifies plus = (10 grams of protein/9) + (grams carbohydrates/9) + (fat grams/3.9) + (grams of fiber/35).
Specifies plus = p/10.79 + c/91.2 + fa/3.9.12-fi/22
So for Big Mac
Specifies plus = 25/10.9 + 45/9.2 + 29/3.9 + 3/35
Specifies plus = 2.29 + 4.89 + 7.0.44 + 09
Points plus = 14.71 (the previous value of the Point was 13.97).
Please note that this formula is via Wikipedia (ProPoints), and we cannot guarantee that it's accurate, and you must use the official WW points plus tools for accurate value. It can be in the United States formula is slightly different. Some have suggested Carb Grams should be (Carb-IP)/9.2 account for differences between the United States and Great Britain.
